Give and Gain Day 2013

On 17 May 2013 employees across the UK got out into their communities volunteering their time to help community groups, schools and local charities. Taking part in Give & Gain Day, the only global day of employee volunteering organised by Business in the Community

Give & Gain Day connects skilled professionals with community organisations by matching them with a volunteering project, offering invaluable support in tough times. Business volunteers will help in schools, day centres, and youth groups, doing everything from school sports days, to employability workshops and CV training for the long term unemployed.

The 2013 event took place against the backdrop of increasing pressures on local services, with recent figures suggesting that 1 in every 6 charities are at risk of closing. With the level of unemployment among 18-24 year olds sitting at a worryingly high 21.1%, this year Give & Gain Day had a focus on supporting young people.

Supporting Burnwood School, Tunstall and Katherine House Hospice, Stafford, employees from Staffordshire University gave their exterior spaces a clean-up and a seasonal tidying.  The quadrangle at Burnwood School is used for pupils to eat outside and for parents as a waiting area at the end of the school day: it’s had a facelift!  A new ‘outer space’ wall mural (photo attached), a treasured memorial garden given a facelift and 7 raised beds colour-theme planted with herbs, flowers, and vegetables to help young people know how food and flavourings grow and support a healthy diet.
